Taxes and Residency

Does Florida have a state income tax?

No. Florida has no state personal income tax. Once you are a Florida resident, the state does not tax your wages, business income or retirement income. New York City residents currently pay New York State income tax plus the NYC resident income tax of roughly 3.078% to 3.876%.

How do I become a Florida resident after leaving New York?

Common steps include getting a Florida driver’s license, registering your vehicles in Florida, registering to vote in Lee County, filing a Declaration of Domicile with the Lee County Clerk, filing for the homestead exemption on your primary residence, and moving your important belongings and records. New York may review residency changes, so talk to a CPA or tax attorney about your situation.

How soon do I need a Florida driver’s license?

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles requires new residents to get a Florida driver’s license within 30 days of establishing residency, and to title and register their vehicles within 10 days, with Florida insurance.

What is the Florida homestead exemption?

If you own your home and make it your permanent residence as of January 1, you can apply for a homestead exemption that reduces the taxable value by up to about $50,000. Homestead also brings the Save Our Homes cap, which limits annual increases in assessed value to 3%. In Lee County, apply with the Property Appraiser by March 1.

Does Florida have an estate tax?

Florida does not have a state estate tax or inheritance tax. New York does have a state estate tax. Speak with an estate planning attorney about how a move affects your plans.

What is an HOA or CDD fee?

An HOA (homeowners association) fee pays for community amenities and services such as the gate, clubhouse, landscaping or cable.
